My rustic oxidized Harvest Moon earrings are made of recycled 24k on recycled sterling silver. They are 5/16th of an inch round (8mm).
I use a variation of the ancient keum boo gilding method to bond 24k gold to sterling silver. It yields a more rustic look than traditional keum boo, with feathered edges and variegate thickness. There is zero waste in the creation of these earrings. I use every tiny scrap.
Once gilded with a nice thick layer of 24k gold the sterling silver is then oxidized to create a truly dramatic and striking design. Sometimes the oxidation yields some dark colors that are subtle, but can be viewed up close, like in these photos. Please note that it is a natural chemical process and I can’t control if there will be some of the color or what color comes out. The earrings are then sealed only on the front with shellac to seal in the beautiful rustic design so it will not fade or darken further with oxidation.
